AFTERLIFE

AFTERLIFE is a site-specific immersive duet with live DJs that will premiere in 2021 in Basel, Switzerland on a former lighthouse ship. Club culture and electronic music are the starting point for diving into the world of two soul mates whose love story ends tragically. This trailer followed a research period in 2020. Stay tuned to see Basel dancers Aline Serrano & Mukdanin Phongpachith as AFTERLIFE continues.

2020

DANCE FOR AN EMPTY THEATER

I was part of a team of 4 Choreographers and Directors commissioned to create ALIVE! a production in Corona times at Theater Lübeck in Germany. The audience was seated in a grid on stage and the performance took place throughout the entire theater space. This solo was inspired by the loneliness and helplessness of the first lockdown.

GLÜCK DAS MIR VERBLIEB

I shot this dance film on the Rhein in Basel, Switzerland. At the single live performance, soprano Emma McNairy sang while watching the dancers on multiple screens backstage. The young female dancers embody the longing and loss expressed in Korngold’s famous aria.

DANCE ABOUT ISOLATION

This choreography was performed with opera singers and shot by Spot & Pixel. What began as a dance about isolation created in my living room became one about liberation and community. The singers released months of pent-up energy at the shoot.

#DISTANCERAVE

Tom Ryser and I, as so many others, missed dancing with others during the first lockdown. Curious about what we could create spontaneously, we headed outside with cameras. Dancers in Basel and around the world joined at the same moment to the same playlist and sent us their videos.

2019

SILBERLICHT

This commission by the Philharmonie Luxembourg was a collaboration with Ensemble Diderot from Paris and two dancers. Mayke Hegger’s light-filled set transformed the room into a magical place for young audiences aged 0 – 3 to travel through the night.

2017

MASS

This production remains a personal highlight. Leonard Bernstein’s MASS is bombastic, touching and ethereal. Together with director Tom Ryser, we integrated professional and lay singers, children, a diverse cast of blues and rock singers, classical ballet dancers, orchestra and a brass band to tell a story about faith, doubt, and coming together.

2016

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR

This production received tremendous acclaim and attention, including nominations for Best Choreography, Directing and Best Production by Musicals Magazine. My choreography was inspired by both club culture and traditional Jewish and tribal dances. It featured five contemporary dancers, opera chorus, musical soloists and a group of young singers from Basel.

2016

KISS ME, KATE

I was so happy to return to Staatsthetaer Kassel to choreograph on dancers in the company I’d joined when I moved to Germany in 2007! In the famous dance number Too Darned Hot I combined contemporary dance and lindy hop in a virtuosic choreography for the dancers, musical singers, opera chorus and a 70 year-old former ballet dancer, Pat. Critics called it the highlight of the evening.

2015

THE FAIRY QUEEN

This was my first production with Dr. Katharina Kost-Tolmein, future General Artistic Director of Theater Münster. We re-imagined Purcell’s semi-opera and it played sold-out to enormous critical and public success for 3 seasons.

2014

MACBETH

In this play, I developed movement for the actors playing the witches. We tapped he actors‘ unique ability to exceed their limits and created an explicit, violent and hysterical physical language that provoked both desire and disgust.

This photo is from Monteverdi’s L’ORFEO at the Royal Danish Opera in 2020, praised by Oper Heute magazine as “ a production of European ranking.“ We were looking for a seamless synthesis of movement and voice to tell the tragic story. As in all my choreography for opera, I was driven to express the essence of the music and to go beyond the decorative or entertaining. My choreography for opera productions has been seen throughout Europe since 2009 in collaboration with directors including Ben Baur, Markus Dietz, Jetske Mijnssen, Tom Ryser, Dominique Mentha and Gabriele Rech.
